Dreaming 2010

Dreaming 2010 / NAISDA Stall

The Dreaming Festival was held in Jinibara Country, Woodford Queensland from 11-12 June 2010; with Indigenous people from many lands celebrating together in spirit and country. Everyone listened, looked and enjoyed the festival which showcased Indigenous arts & performance.

The NAISDA stall was a focal point of contact which enabled new audition registrations, networking with other Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Communities and contact with Indigenous employment and educational organisations across Australia.

For example, we met the Doomadgee Dance Group and reconnected with the Mornington Island Dancers. Musica Viva is an organization that provides music education to over 300,000 students and teachers each year and into every corner of Australia. Musica Viva representatives are now set to work with NAISDA to provide possible vocational outcomes for NAISDA graduates and other performance opportunities for NAISDA . Musica Viva staff will explore possibilities that will enable NAISDA graduates to tour throughout Australia, allowing primary and high school students to experience musical genres, performance and culture from and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspective.

The NAISDA performance was on Sunday 13th June, in front of a full house of approx 500 people; it was an artistically brilliant performance, consisting of two pieces:

  1. He Toi Whakairo He Mana Tangata; A rope of genealogy: Where there is art, the people flourish, where there is artistic excellence, there is human dignity
  1. Black Sleep: What is the state of society;  is seen as a funfair; society is seen as a masquerade

All NAISDA staff attending the performance reported a complete professional performance and attitude by all Developing Artists who received a very positive response from the audience.

A few Developing Artists commented about the festival:

  • Beau: It was a culture shock! I felt the spirituality absorbing into me.
  • Tom: The whole thing was awesome; the performances, the workshops and so many things to try. The downside is not enough time to do it all!
  • Eric: I loved performing and hanging out with my dad.
  • Carmel: I enjoyed the diversity of the different cultures
  • Tony: My highlight was meeting family, I never knew I had so many family members.
  • Ann-Janette: It was an eye opener for my career in dance and it was great to see all different Indigenous Cultures of the world coming together.

Rarriwuy Hick and the Chooky Dancers

Second year student Rarriwuy Hick will be touring with the Chooky Dancers during much of 2010. They are touring with a play called the Wrong Skin, a Yolgnu version of the Romeo and Juliette story. In a fairytale twist, Rarriwuy was offered the role but turned it down to come to NAISDA to study. Nigel Jamieson came to NAISDA last year 2009 to observe the students in cultural classes and Rarriwuy was again chosen for the role. NAISDA has worked with Rarriwuy to ensure she will be able to combine the tour with her studies. NAISDA 2008 graduate Rosealee Pearson will be choreographing Wrong Skin.

The play will open at the Adelaide Festival then tour to the Malthouse in Melbourne, the Darwin Festival and Sydney Opera House.

Rarriwuy is the daughter of Janet Munyarryun, a founding member of Bangarra and a NAISDA tutor.

All staff and developing artist wish you well Rarriwuy.

Feel Like School Didn't Know What You Wanted?

What Ghenoa Gela wanted from school was a life. But what she got was a series of dead-end jobs that didn't take her anywhere. And then Ghenoa heard about NAISDA Dance College. She auditioned, was accepted, and in 2005 became a developing artist at NAISDA. In April this year, Ghenoa graduated as a part of the class of 2008.
