Zugubal - Tracking the Stars

Weaving the tales of the Torres Strait

A NAISDA Dance Production

Zugubal is a breathtaking dance from NAISDA, Australia’s Premier Indigenous Dance College. Zugubal is a word used by all Torres Strait Islander people to acknowledge and give respect for past, present and future law.

This exciting performance will feature Koiki by renowned Indigenous choreographer Gail Mabo. Including traditional dancers from the Torres Strait, Koiki is the story of Gail’s late father, the celebrated Eddie Mabo. This contemporary form of creative expression takes us on the journey of Eddie Mabo’s life.

The program will also include dynamic, new and contemporary works by some of Australia’s noted choreographers.

Third year NAISDA student Thomas Kelly is making an impact on a national level.

Thomas was selected to participate in a collaboration with Dale Pope from the Australian School of Performing Arts to film a dance clip which will be distributed to every school in Australia.  The clip features original choreography created by Thomas and Dale to the Warumpi Band’s 1987 song BlackFella/WhiteFella, and forms part of an educational resource pack in support of GenerationOne’s national school Competition.

GenerationOne is a movement to end Indigenous disadvantage in one generation – this generation, and the competition aims to encourage teachers and students to actively engage with the issues of Indigenous education, employment and training. The dance clip features on the promotional DVD, which is designed to inspire students to get moving, and to encourage teachers to introduce this issue into their curriculum.

Thomas, who is in his third year of study at NAISDA said, “I was really excited to be involved in this project, and to have the opportunity to promote the message of GenerationOne. It’s really important to get young Australians involved in ending Indigenous disadvantage, so I hope this will encourage schools to enter the Competition. I’m thrilled that this clip will be going to every school in Australia!”

2011 Graduation - A Celebration of Excellence

On Friday 25th March, 31 students graduated from NAISDA in an outdoor ceremony in the grounds of Gosford Regional Gallery. The programme included a smoking ceremony, traditional dances from Elcho and Saibai Islands and an inspirational speech by Gail Mabo. Executive Director, KIm Walker said the college was excited that Ms Mabo would be speaking. "As both a past student of NAISDA and the daughter of an indigenous rights champion Gail offered our graduates a unique perspective on how to thrive in the areas of indigenous arts and stand up for their beliefs."

Four students - Eric Avery, Travis De Vries, Ann-Janette Phillips and Steven Smith-Ince - graduated with a Diploma in Careers in Dance. These four students competed for the inaugural Chairmans Prize for Excellence with Travis De Vries being awarded the winner.

Certificate II Cooking?

The Certificate II DA's have been busy on Monday nights during "Life Skills for Dancers" learning all about eating a healthy and balanced diet for full-time dance training, managing weekly budgets and getting enough sleep.

Their first assessment task was to work in groups to make a cheap and healthy snack to share in class for just $10. As you can see in the photo's, the guys in Cert II (Hans, Ses, Casey and Kyle) had fun with this task and made us all delicious and nutritious sushi, AND they achieved a 100% mark for their first assessment task!

New Facilities Get the Green Light

Finally, the new building for NAISDA seems like it will become a reality with the passing of the Development Application at Gosford City Council.  Demolition of the existing derelict building is scheduled for within the month, and we hope that the building will be finalized by the end of the year.

The building, made possible by a grant from the Commonwealth Government and a supplementary grant for the fitout from the NSW Government, will contain three dance studios, amenities for the Developing Artists, a Cultural room and a fire circle as well as refurbishment of the existing administration areas.

Feel Like School Didn't Know What You Wanted?

What Ghenoa Gela wanted from school was a life. But what she got was a series of dead-end jobs that didn't take her anywhere. And then Ghenoa heard about NAISDA Dance College. She auditioned, was accepted, and in 2005 became a developing artist at NAISDA. In April this year, Ghenoa graduated as a part of the class of 2008.
